Setting up my new asus x551ca laptop

Bought this in January to use, initially, while in NZ for 6 weeks, leaving end of next week. Was told I would set it up without problems if I just followed the screen instructions.

There is no manual. I have never set up a computer before.

Finally extracted it from box last week, felt proud enough even to have charged it up. That alone should indicate the level of help I need now.

I can't get the thing going.

Says 'password incorrect'. Didn't know I had one. The password clue is actually what I see on the screen is my computer's name. I've attempted various re-workings of this, but all come up as incorrect.

Looked up password reset help for this model online. My desktop computer uses no longer supported windows xp. The next step in the laptop help said to insert a password reset disk. Don't have one, so looked that up. Requires me to install silverlight on desktop - doesn't work, never has since purchase years back.

Can anyone please help me back to the start and guide me through the set-up process?

I've asked for help before with many techie things, but dearly want to have this with me on the plane, friendly:) and ready to go next week.

Thankyou, if you're prepared for this onerous task.:o

Start again (METHOD ONE). Write down your password this time.

EDIT: you didn't have caps lock on did you? (when entering the password)

No gc, no cap locks on.
    Thankyou for responding.

From that link I read 'to its original working state', but it hasn't yet worked and I don't understand the following sentence at all. Amend: yes, I know the words, but they don't mean anything in 'Do this/Do that' terms to me.
'Before using the Recovery Partition, copy your data files (such as Outlook PST files) to USB storage devices or to a network drive and make note of any customized configuration settings (such as network settings).'

Do I assume that shop man assigned me a p/w? He did ask me for a memorable name for laptop. That is what I see now, but nothing else was done to my knowledge.
At p/w re-set prompt, I was told to insert a usb flashdrive. Did this and nothing more has happened.

I am also seeing the start-up video and there is a hundred-plus pages of manual download. I'll print this out if there I can increase no. of pages per a4 sheet - can't see how atm.

looking at p44, but can't proceed onto p45, where:'The Start screen appears after successfully signing into your User Account.' I wish.

If you haven't logged on yet you do not have any data to save. So go straight to Method One
PS. This is page 89 in the manual.

If you don't want to restart from "factory" settings you'll have to ask the shop man what password he entered.

    Exactly so re: pointThe First.
2nd: more or less feared another loss-of-time hike out there to far reaches of A14.
Suspect this will be better option though. Should I buy 4 writable discs for the back-up as shown here:
    http://support.asus.com/FeatureVideo.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=3&s=557&m=X551CA&os=&hashedid=NjTBDAvwQa2EHvsG
I also hear her pronunciation ' !!!ooose'. Not what I've been calling it ....

Had to take payg Blackberry back to another Mr T hier, as mthly inet bundle wasn't being recognised. + is that suitable Bb bundle is £5, prev. £7.50 - won't be on for NZ though:-)

Thankyou so much for not patronising me.

Method One reinstates the computer to factory state. What it does is install the "Recovery partition" which SHOULD(**) be on your new computer.

What you need the disks for (or perhaps the shop man gave you a set of disks?) is to make a backup of the "Recovery partition"
You can only do this backup once you have logged on. But I'm sure you realise that!

(**) Method One will only work IF there is a "recovery partition". There should be one (you will not know until you have tried Method One) unless the shop man gave you a "not new" computer.

Just to rule out an obvious one - have you tried just entering a blank password? Some machines, for some reason, ask for a password when one is not set, and you just need to hit enter with no password input

It turned out that something store-specific had been programmed for security into my lappie.

Nothing could have been done by me. This was stripped out yesterday. I hope to have it with me on plane Saturday.
