Honda Civic.
2005 - 2012 model has room for 5 adults. Massive boot. Reliable. not sure about petrol engines though, i have a 2.2 diesel which you're not really doing the miles for... but something like this http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201402031514597/sort/pricedesc/usedcars/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/make/honda/quantity-of-doors/5/fuel-type/petrol/price-to/5000/radius/40/postcode/ws41nn/page/1/model/civic?logcode=p

Look at the NCAP website... There's a big difference between a 3 star and a 5 star rating... I know which one I'd rather choose for my family.:hello:0 -
If you want 5 doors, cheap, reliable and not necessarily size, at a push a Honda Jazz might do the job. I picked up an 08 plate a year ago (admittedly the base model) for around your budget - it has 5 doors and the way the back seats fold would give you flexibility if you had to transport stuff! We've taken ours around with 2 kids in the back and a bike or a load of shopping in the boot. Its not a "family" car as such but before you rule it out have a look and see if it would suit as its about the same size as your polo.Adventure before Dementia!0
