  • I find it appealing because you can apply and process it online rather than go into the bank with them and all the paperwork. I think a bank account of some type is beneficial as they get older. They need to understand paying their mobile phone etc and managing money. Mine have a tendency to spend everything at once... then ask for more. A bank account has helped us all keep track and see how quickly it goes! What worries me about GoHenry! is the normal stuff with new ideas - who are they owned by, how charges compare etc.
  • Can somebody tell me how kids can pay cheques from gran and aunty to a Go Henry account?

Kids: Aunty, they don't accept cheques where we live.
    Aunty: Where do you live?
    Kids: The 21st century.

The Henry website says there is such a thing as a relative account. Sounds like a nice idea for Gran to see Billy Jo saving.
  • I was looking into GoHenry for my soon-to-be 11 year old son but didn't like the monthly fee. We will wait for his birthday in January to open a proper account at Barclays. While this may not be a wise choice for some kids, in our case this will be an appropriate responsibility for my son.

Doesn't answer the question though does it - IMO a child account with a bank building society (FREE) is much better.

Exactly. This is a site about saving money. It's hardly helping instill that into kids by giving them something that takes £24 per year out of their money when the same ability to use a card is available free with a bank.

My follow up having signed up.

My daughter (15) loves it, I think it's great. I have previously been trying to make her aware of where she is spending her money but she has not done this, go henry does this for you other than cash spends but DD will use her card where she can for sure!

Both my kids got debit card accounts with the bank when they turned 11. They can manage them online and on phone app. It doesn't cost them anything and they get a small amount of interest. Isn't that a better way of teaching them especially as age 15 they'll need to be able to use a bank fairly soon?

I can't see any benefit this card gives that a bank account doesn't and lots of reasons not to use it.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Sorry I got about 50 words into this and started hyperventilating due to lack of breaks.

If you'd care to put this into paragraphs so it's readable you may get more advice.

We tried to set up a Gohenry account but before we had a chance to put much money into it, they closed the account without telling us seemingly based on a credit check. Our credit rating isn't great but we have been approved for other things recently so we're mystified as to why this product that surely has no risk involved for Gohenry as no borrowing money is involved, has withdrawn their service. They didn't even have the decency to tell us either, just couldn't log in and then the guy in the call centre said he'd call us back. After waiting for hours they sent an email saying they reviewed the info given when the account was opened and decided to withdraw their services. So if you have a less than impeccablecredit rating yourself beware that Gohenry may withdraw their services without warning x
