Hey all,

In-laws have asked me to see if i can find them a cheaper deal for their utilities. They are both in early 70's and currently with SSE (energyplus Argos standard tarriff). The problem being is that they stay with the same company for years and just keep renewing ie sky, car insurance etc:(

So, they live in a small 2 bed bungalow (5 rooms total) with the only luxury item being a laptop, yet they are paying £55 per month electric and £35 per month gas.

Elec Aug 13 - Nov 13, 894 at 12.12p
Discounted standing 78 days at 15.55p

Gas Aug 13 - Nov 13, 1446kwh at 4.02p
Discounted Standing 78 days at 15.55p

Can anyone tell me if this is a standard rate or paying under or over?

Thanks in advance!

Best to use a comparison site.

Price comparison sites accredited by the Confidence Code

I use Ebico as they don't have a Standing charge or tiered rates.
  • On a side note: Do they use gas or elec for hot water and heating? Their elec usage looks to be higher than average and their gas lower than average. This might (but not necessarily) make non-duel fuel a better option. Anyway, you'll be able to tell when you do the comparisons.

    There is non.

You just have to pick the least expensive by doing research.

I am on Eon's Warm Assist and I pay

    electricity SC 0.200130
    Rate 0.102380

    gas SC 0.200130
    Rate 0.031670

however this is not available to new customers.

I only got it because at the time I was on benefits.

Post your annual kWh figures, or use them on any comp site. You can't extrapolate annual usage from one autumn quarter.
There are no special OAP tariffs-they already get WFA once 60.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Ageuk, in conjuction with E.on, offer a tariff specifically to the over 60's

Best to point them in the direction of this MSE article then ;)

You've already answered your own question ;)
Energyplus Argos standard tarriff - it provides a discount of 10% at Argos or Homebase on goods up to the value of £500, for every £50 spent on energy.

If they are regular big spenders at either/both of those stores, they could effectively be getting their energy for free already.
This will not be reflected in any savings indicated on any comparison site.

They may stay with the same supplier, but they would have actively transferred to this tariff, so presumably it was atttractive for them to do so at the time, even if not now.
