Stair handrail fitting

I've got a new handrail for the stairs to replace the old one. Having a quick look for fixing brackets I've realised the one I've just got doesn't have a groove in it. All the brackets I've seen have a narrow fixing to fit into a slot.

Other than aesthetics is there any need for the groove or is it okay to fit them to a flat rail?

Also while I'm asking. The existing rail is 2.5m and fitted using three brackets (to a plastered brick wall). The new one will be about 3.5m. Would three bracket still be sufficient or is more recommended?

Hard to say without seeing the rail/brackets some are flimsier than others and depends who's doing the fixings - need drilling through into the brick with good length screws and plugs - more brackets will be better than less. Also the screws into the rail need to be adequate length and piloted.

I'll be fitting it myself. I've already repaired / refitted the existing one so I'm happy with the actual fitting.


Just wasn't sure if fitting the brackets to the outer edge would cause too much extra stress. As long as I use decent sized screws into the rail I don't suppose it would matter. I'll look at having four or five brackets too.

Sounds like you've bought a mopstick rail - the flimsiest (?) type, so I'd suggest at least 4, better still 5.

Pre-drill the screwholes in the rail and you shouldn't have any issues with splitting.

The builder picked it up for me. Said he was getting it from Travis Perkins but can't see it on their website.

Oh, not that bad then, you'll be fine with 4, IMHO.

Still pilot hole though!
