Interior decoration charges

Hi,
I bought a place (north london) and was looking for quotation for decoration.
It's a 3 bed detached, 2 reception and a kitchen. The work involves removing the wallpaper, false ceilings and tidying up the skirting/doors etc.
This is the email i got justifying the quote of 3K:
***
basically id say the the atual painting cost would be half of the 3k .to
remove the ceiling tiles and the glue they leave behind on its own could
take 2-3 guys a day or two dsepending on how well they were put up ,then we
have to strip all the paper this too could bea long task id put two guys on
this and expect it to take 3-5 days depending on how easy it comes off .
***

Is this reasonable? I have no experience on how much this should ideally cost. Any comments?

Hi there Dew, Has these people actually seen the job?, the reply seems a bit sketchy to me.
As for the false ceiling, are you talking about polystyrene tiles?, as I have taken these off loads of times, and its just a matter of getting the right angle under the tile, and getting stuck in lol.

I would advise you that if you did go with this firm, is to get something in writing also not just an email,as TBH its not really much of a quote, also there is no mention of what happens when they get the paper off.

What I mean is, what paper is on there now?, if its the old woodchip or anaglyta, the chances are that when they take the paper off, plaster will blow, and there will loads of prep.
If it is like this, and they did a fair bit of prep, the chances are again, that the walls are going to need lining.

I have just come up against this in a house, and was practically in tears, but fortunately I had the foresight to think there might be worse lurking under the paper, and I was right.
In the end I have lined every room, as well as spending days on prep, infact some of the walls should have been skimmed, but they do look good now.

What you dont want is matey then adding on arms and legs, so its best to ask him for a seperate quote in the event that some of the rooms have to be lined.

Pity you cant just take some off here and there to get an idea how bad or good your walls are.

    Thanks misgrace!
These people have seen the job. Infact I do have a sketchy quote for built-in wardrobes as well from same guy!
I am not sure about the kind of false ceiling! :( Its just white squares :) Doesnt look like tiles..
The house is totally empty and the guy did rip off decent amount of wallpaper (in main bedroom) to see the wall. I dont know what is meant by lining though?

    Shame you can't come on a weekeday/sat :(
