Windows 7 issues with CD/DVD reader

Since upgrading to Windows 7 I have not been able to use my internal cd drive to play/rip my discs. I bought an external DVD/CD-R writer, which isn,t that much better although I did manage to rip a cd last night, it makes a very loud whirling noise and and it keeps on having to install drivers. The DVD reader is pretty much useless, it won't let rip my films, sometimes it recognizes the film sometimes nothing. Will I have the same issue if I buy another eXternal DVD/CD?

Is the external one powered and is it connected directly to a USB 2 port on your PC?
Do you have multiple hard disks and a graphics card in your PC?
(I'm wondering if there is a power supply issue/overload.)0 -
It's connected directly to the USB port, I believe I have connected them properly as well. my internal hard drive is split it two I have ones that's around 70 gig and the another which is about 2 gig. No additional graphics card0
