Does anyone know what the threshold is for needing to apply to the courts to release funds from the deceased's bank account? I understand that after a certain amount, you have to go through the courts to release the funds (using a solicitor)

It depends on the individual bank and even then, some will release above the levels at their discretion too.
See http://www.legalbeagles.info/forums/showthread.php?21653-Banks-requirements-and-info for a sample from various banks (not sure how up to date the figures are though, so best check with relevant bank).
