Plagued with moths - coming in from next door

I am plagued with moths in my house. Don't know where they are coming from but suspect from the house next door where the elderly couple living there never knowingly throw anything away. The moths have got into the carpet behind the sofa and we are planning to have it replaced.
What does anyone recommend as the best exterminators/deterrents?

Steam pressure cleaner (hire one ) it destroys the eggs , otherwise the infestation will reappear. Although from what you say it sounds more like carpet moths which come from anywhere but love to hang around rather than breeding laying eggs and going. Oh and a good vacuum afterwards. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0

I assume these are clothes moths
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clothes_moth
which also like carpets. They can come from anywhere and there is no need to blame a specific source.
Traps can be part of the solution:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/CLOTHES-MOTH-TRAPS-x-5/dp/B003KP2TK6/ref=sr_1_3?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1397324092&sr=1-3&keywords=moth+trap
(no need, actually, to buy the trap --you just need the refills).
They do work, but you should also kill on sight. However, you can only really keep them in check. Total elimination is usually not possible.0 -
We had them in our house with no one to blame. Ended up getting rid of all our chargers but we still find them!0

Sounds like the case-bearing clothes moth (http://www.pestcontroldirect.co.uk/acatalog/How_to_deal_with_Carpet_Moth.html).
As long as you move all furniture each time you vacuum, and do it thoroughly, you should be OK. They like dark places under sofas, armchairs etc etc. Obviously, this only applies to wool carpets, not synthetic.0 -

I had a real problem with moths in a carpet really small ones I tried everything to get rid of them but nothing worked. Eventually I spoke to a vet he suggested a spray that is commonly used to control fleas it wasn't cheap around £15 a can but it worked immediately really sorry can't remember the name but your local vet should know.0
