if you want to use the disk again, take the cover off, remove the hard disk, put it in a usb caddy, use it for backup.

if you want to sell it, factory restore it (instructions in speedup sticky), and wipe free space with ccleaner

if you want to dump it, either remove the hard disk, or wipe the machine with killdisk or dban by creating a boot cd, and booting from it.

There are many threads on this subject if you search for dban

I have been looking at them but am not sure which size ones format ones ie this just mentions laptop do I need the 3.5" one for a desktop they seem to be nearly 3 x the price / is SATA right though?

I've managed to do that which is an achievement for me.

Just a question how I dispose of the HD now

I think people either keep them for piece of mind!

Or use them in one of the HDD Caddy mentioned above, or give it a bash with a hammer then chuck it - but don't take my word for it lol!! ;)

Seems a waste of a perfectly working hard disk when you can still use it for backup, but as already suggested take a hammer to it if you want to dump it.

desktops need a 3.5" one, there are two types, sata and pata, a read of the label or a quick google of the connector should identify which, 8 yrs ago pata was still around (wide ribbon cable connector)

    amazon, ebuyer, scan, ebay, anywhere.

I will wait until I can remove it to have a look at the connector then.
