Tracing old Halifax shares

This week my wife has had an AGM ballot form for LLoyds Banking Group. However, when I asked her about it, she doesn't know how many shares she has or if when/ if she has been paid dividends. I presume they are shares from the original Halifax Building Society windfall many moons ago.
She also thinks she can remember selling some of them. What is the easiest and correct way to find whatever she does have?

Any advice appreciated.
