Phone returned from repair centre with cracked screen :(

Would be grateful for any advice - last week I sent off my Galaxy S3 to Tesco repair centre as it would not boot up or even go into recovery mode. I packed it up securely in the packaging they sent me (I put the phone in the box they sent me, and also wrapped it in bubble wrap before putting it in the jiffy bag they sent).
They did not repair it as they said the warranty was void - I did not argue as the phone is almost 2 yrs old, so I just told them that I did not want to pay for repair and just to send the phone back to me.
Anyway, the phone has arrived back with a massive crack in the screen, which was DEFINITELY not there when I sent it off.
I have rung Tesco but they say I will have to ring back on Monday when the repair centre is open.
I am fairly certain that they will say that the screen was cracked when they received it and that it must have been damaged in transit.
Is this just bad luck? Is there anything I can do? I was planning on getting a new phone anyway, but am still really annoyed that they have returned my phone in a worse condition than when I sent it to them. Thanks for any advice :)

It is probably the cracked screen when delivered to them, that they are using to state the warranty is void. My daughter's Galaxy S3 phone had the same problem and after reading up on it online, it is an inbuilt software problem that caused it to go dead. We were lucky in that we packed it up really well and took photos before it was sent off in a pre-paid special delivery envelope as we were told if it was damaged in transit, they would not repair (photos of phone and packaging). The thing is that Samsung had to replace the whole of the front screen anyway as it comes as a unit and although we were not charged the cost was £170 on the repair sheet sent back with it, so in reality it would not have mattered if the screen was cracked.

The packaging sent with the pre-paid Jiffy bag would not have been sufficent to protect the phone IMO and I was told they do not accept it if you hand deliver to their reapir centre or arrange your own courier (they no longer offer a courier I was told).
