hi moved into my flat int he middle of February.

i signed the docs at lettings agent and told me that they took the metre readings the previous day and gave my details to the energy suppliers Scottish Gas. they told me that the there was a gas check, there was an issue with the boiler, the owner has the british gas care cover on it. The lettings agency said that the owner had put on the central heating on to keep the flat warm, they already knew before signing that i would not be moving in until 6 days later as i'm at work all day i couldn't arrange for the move before this.

I moved in 6 days later i signed the docs, i saw the first estimated bill for the 6 days - £11.00, when i gave scottish gas my meter readings the bill was now OVER £30 - i blew my top how the heck can a bill be that much for 6 days and no one is in the flat, this place has an electric oven, it's only the central heating that is on gas, there is a power shower and bath and the boiler is one of those instant water heating ones. This flat is 1 bedroom. they agreed to remove the readings.

i changed from scottish gas to EDF i gave the metre readings, for 5 weeks gas and electricity my bill is now £133 - HOW THE HECK IS IT THIS EXPENSIVE, i have never paid that much for a months gas and heating in my life. Other places that did have gas cooker were never that much? the heating is only on for 4 hours 50 mins per day, when it was very cold at the weekend i had it on most of the day for those two days. If i am not here i dont have it on.

From the start i turned down the boiler central heating settings to whatever low level it would still come on at, the radiators have thermastat controls i put them up high as - there is no central thermastat control which is what i am used to.

When i spoke to British gas they said i am only using a low amount of gas about 3 units or whatever the measurements are for it.

I have had thoughts that the gas metre dials are spinning round fast, i'm really not sure what is going on here but can someone explain.

  • my bills have gone through the roof as well, if you can get online acess to your bills have a look through them, they are now all doing a standing charge or a daily rate for energy so even before you use anything you have racked up about 30p a day just in the standing charge...most annoying. i did look at my meter and for just the water heating up for 2 hours..mine is old style boiler it used one unit of gas but when its turned into kw its more very confusing im sure they do it to baffle people
goal for 2014....i will manage money better ..must resist shopping..............:A

yeha i know about standing charge but even the first week when i had not even moved in and did not go into the flat, the bill was £30. when they estimate was £11. Estimates whereever i have lived have been not far off but this IS wildly off the scale.

It's either that or british gas REALLY IS THAT EXPENSIVE! or there is a problem with the gas metre. when i gave the electric readings for theat 6 day period it was only £2 + cost. can you image the amount if i had a gas cooker it would be astronomical it would be £200 for the bill for a month. my edf blue price promise if for about £70 a month which is about right given the previous 7 flats i have been in whether gas and/or electric.

edf have asked me to take daily metre readings for next 7 days.

byt he way i live here by myself

If the heating was left on quite high and 24/7 for those first few days then unfortunatley a lot of gas could have been used. Is the flat well insulated? Minimal drafts etc.?

Can you post your actual usage in kwh for gas and elec for the 6 day period and the 5 week period, please? It will give a better idea of usage than using cost will.

    Pedant's corner: it's a meter. not a metre.
