Gazpablo -If the dog is healthy and has no pre existing conditions than you can shop around for a better deal. Bear in mind that you will normally have a 14 day exclusion period for anything from the renewal date.

You will probably find that premiums will increase as the dog gets older and 6 -7 years old may be borderline for many companies so unfortunately attract a dramatic increase.

You can of course "self insure" but if you do encounter a massive bill in the near future, would you be able to pay it?

I may be wrong, but I think JL are relatively new to this type of insurance market so they might be offering really good deals to attract customers but the rates may not be sustainable in the long term which is why the prices increase at renewal.

I have recently taken pet insurance with JL so I guess I need to be prepared for a premium hike next year

It's on the balance of probabilities (which, after all, is how insurance companies themselves work). As the dog is relatively young, there will probably be time to save for a few years before the hefty bills start coming in. But of course something might happen earlier (accident for example). You have to decide whether you want to spend £600 a year (and perhaps never have to use it) or save it (and perhaps need to spend more than you've saved in a couple of years' time). You pays your money, and takes your chance.

Personally, I would hang on to the money.
