Thank you! everyone for your comments. I am even more worried about it now - didn't realise it would be such a problem.
mart.vader, I haven't seen them fly in as yet - my son saw them and said they were Starlings. I thought they had gone as there have been no droppings on the path below for about a week but I think I can hear them sometimes.
Do you know when they finish nesting? don't fancy chasing birds around inside the loft0 -
All nesting birds are protected, I believe.
ETA: Yup, thought so.

Sort of.
The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects nesting birds, but the same Act also allows what are known as General Licenses that permit 'authorised persons' to do things that would otherwise be illegal. Hence all landowners and occupiers of land are perfectly entitled to destroy the eggs and nests of certain named species.
Unfortunately for the OP, the Common Starling aka sturnus vulgaris does not appear to be one of them. It's open season on pigeons and magpies and the like, but you're supposed to leave the starlings alone.0 -

Doubtful.
But you still wouldn't know or notice.0 -

Thanks. I'll tell the cat."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
I'd have thought they should be finished fairly soon. You'll probably know because you won't hear them any more. Don't disturb them until you're sure they're gone and then get the work done.0

However, I have discovered a handy thing that stops your water being contaminated by passing livestock. It is called a tank lid. It's an amazing gadget and keeps the water quite unsoiled. I don't know why more people don't have them fitted.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
