Is sit safe to use sstandard (cheap) emulsion on a shhelf for my towels?

I'm putting up a shelf in my bathroom, and obviously woulod rather not have just plain wood/MDF (especially MDF). I think the only paint I have handy is standard, cheap emulsion stuff; but I'm not sure if that's going to hold well enough if the bathroom gets a little steamed up? Is it going to just run/rub off on the towels?

You shouldn't really be using standard MDF in a bathroom. You need the moisture resiatant variety.
Seondly, using emulsion is of no use. You will need an oil based undercoat and top coat to seal it.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -

Found some decent plywood I have spare; and varnish should do the trick?Emulsion is water based.

There is a difference between emulsion paint (intended for use on plaster) and water-based trim paints (designed for use on wood).
If you have no undercoat or eggshell already, it would probably be cheaper to buy a ready-painted shelf from somewhere like B & M.
if you think you will use the paint elsewhere in the house at some point, buy some Johnstones acrylic undercoat and gloss/satin.0
