Advice on painting internal stairs please

Hi all,

I live in a victorian terrace and currently have exposed floorboards throughout.

the stairs and 1msq landing are the only part that are carpeted. the carpet is looking a bit sorry for itself and my cat will not stop scratching at it and pulling bits off :mad:

i would love to rip up the carpet, strip it and have the steps their natural wood colour and the back of the tread white like the skirting.

however i am concerned that the stairs will be very slippy, esp as the stairs are steep.

has anyone got any experience of these non-slip paints and whether they would actually be good enough to use on wooden stairs to ensure they were not too slippy to walk up and down? i have seen a clear non slip paint that i was thinking i could apply over the wood on the steps or perhaps just use a sandy coloured paint like the ronseal dimond hard.

or if i just stained the stripped steps would this be too slippy?

Hi,
I have done exactly this and couldn't find much advice on the innernetz about it. Most people advised to put carpet on as paint or varnish would be too slippy.

However I found Sadolin's antislip varnish for the treads, which I had to order specially from a Crown centre - a quick google shows it may not be available any more. I painted the risers white and sanded and varnished the treads - they aren't slippy and I feel safe on them. They ARE a little more slippy than carpet would be and I probably wouldn't have risked it with little kids, but with bare feet / shoes / slippers, it's fine, and looks great.
