My local Asda does 3 sections for most of its fruit - Ripe, Nearly There and Ripen At Home.

Although I'm more of an avocado person to be honest!

You could try a local green grocers? They generally have fresh fruit available over the counter at fair prices?

How do they differentiate between the sections? I've never noticed a divide in my local store.

I bought strawberries and kiwis in Tesco two weeks ago. The kiwis took ten days to soften then went bad within three days. The strawberries didn't soften at all just started to go black and soggy at the ends.

When I started work in the supermarkets in the late 70's, fruit came into store ripe and ready to eat. We had fresh produce deliveries on Tuesdays to Fridays. Saturdays, if there was none left in stock, tough we had sold out and weren't getting fresh till the following Tuesday .

Strawberries, pears, peaches, full of juice and flavour because they were ripe when picked and in store and sold within days

The fruits not ready we're things like melons and pineapples which were obviously imported and therefore picked and packed long before they were ripe

And here lies the crux. Back then fruit and veg were seasonal. We sold what was grown in the country. Very little exotics were stocked. Bananas, melons and pineapples were as good as it got

When new fruits or vegetable came on the market we had little leaflets to give out for them to explain how they were served, or cooked

Nowadays with out ever increasing multi national society, we demand a huge range of fruit and veg, and most of it is now imported

It's weeks old before it's even on the supermarket shelves.

Stick to what's in season and buy from a green grocer or stall.

But the problem has got a lot worse recently, presumably from pressure to reduce waste because of the recession.

It's not very long since Tescos bananas were yellow rather than green, and you could get nice soft juicy comice pears. When they were selling loose kiwis you could rummage for ones that were ripe enough, but now they sell packs of kiwis they're still like concrete after 10 days.

Put fruit in a fruit bowl along with apples and they will ripen quicker.

I buy fruit and veg at Waitrose, because it's so much better quality. It is a tiny bit more expensive to buy, but it actually isn't overall because I can actually eat it all.

So at Tesco I might buy 6 apples for £1, but only eat 4 and throw the others away (and the 4th one will be on its way off so not as nice to eat.)
At Waitrose, it's £1.50 for 6, but they're all really nice.

  • A good tip to speed up your fruit to rippen is to buy a bananas and place it next to the fruit. Also put the fuit near to the window, so that it is exposed the sun light. I was told this will do it years ago, and Ive was amazed when we did a test.

I'm confused. If you people don't like unripe fruit, why are you buying it?

There's always separate sections for ripe and unripe fruit. Are you picking yours from the wrong section?

Don't like green bananas? Buy yellow ones then!

I think this can vary on the supermarket and the size of it.

I would expect big city supermarkets to have a variety of bananas colours as they have enough shelf space to accommodate this.
But it can be a bit of lottery.

Though that's why they can charge a premium for having a specific ripeness to them. if you want consistency you have to pay more for it.

Me personally, I can not eat banana when they have gone black, they make me gag a little. However they are fine for to put in a banana milkshake.
As I get most of my food shop once a week. I aim to get a few ripe banana and some under ripe to last the 6 days when I get the chance.

What? Fruit ripens when exposed to sunlight!? Who'd have thought it. No wonder you were amazed. Sounds like witchcraft or something ;)

Seriously? You've had pears sat on your table for four weeks, and they haven't rotted away yet?

And people buying stuff hey don't like. Then moaning about it!

This is a strange thread indeed.
  • Prefer my fruit ripened on the tree/plant - most supermarket fruit tastes of nothing often because it's picked too early. Can't believe the difference in taste when you buy fruit in supermarkets abroad...
