I don't think debt is that dirty a little secret any more, but it's certainly very hard to talk about. Not least as some people you might want to talk to tend to be very opinionated, endebted themselves or both, so it becomes a conversation you end up not having.

At which point that there are "money worries" might be noted but the extent & damage is hidden.

Which is where the CAB are worth their weight in rubies, & why the DFW board is so liberating - behind usernames, all sorts of truths can emerge & an enormous amount of help, support & encouragement is available.

If Mr Lewis joined in, he'd waffle on about 'good debt' and 'bad debt'. But the average Joe (or Joan) doesn't have time, inclination or, probably, knowledge, to understand the difference.

This government has continued the previous one's move to get more people into debt with university loans and the low interest policy. Not new, I know - Macmillan did the same in the 50s.

And they won't introduce better financial education into schools because it would get young people to realise that ANY debt is bad if you can't afford it! SIMPLES............
  • It's terrible, but my husband doesn't know the exact amount of my debt and I think he would be horrified if I told him ( £7k on a credit card, £12,300 on a loan, £7k student debt so £26,300!!)

I confessed to my two best mates the other week and that did make me feel a bit better. I would just rather keep it to myself and keep plodding on and tapping away at it, rather than have everyone panicking around me. I'm the one who got myself into this mess so I need to get out of it.

I'm trying to ebay anything I don't need / or use, have re-gifted a few times and have got cheap and healthy lunches down a treat. I would really like to start a family in the next couple of years, so determined to sort it all out before that happens!
