Cancelled insurance - charged

Hello,

I took out home insurance through halifax on a Saturday. Realised I needed to use another provider to get the cover I needed in time frame so cancelled first thing the following Monday morning. All fine - this was a few days before policy was even due to start (25 March)

3 weeks later - (today) just got into new home for first time found letter talking about a direct debit in my name for £4 a month. Couldn't work out what it would be for. Then realised it was the Home Emergency part of the insurance policy I had cancelled. Checked bank account and I was charged 2 days ago.

Home Emergency through RSA. I had assumed on phoning to cancel the policy I had cancelled the whole thing.

What should I do? Contact Halifax or RSA? Should I be able to get the money back?
Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)

Savings target June 18 - £22,281.99 / £25,000

In many cases these add-ons are provided by third party companies and even if you cancel the costs are not refundable, you may have to pay the annual premium for the HE cover.

It was cancelled within the cooling off period and before the policy even incepted. At most that could be charged is an admin fee as there was no time on cover. Of cause the admin fee can be as much as the premium but that is unlikely

I would contact Halifax as they have arranged these policies for you.

Like you, I would have assumed that if you cancel within your cooling off period all cover would be cancelled inc HE.

Some "add on" products can't be cancelled after the cooling off period but normally it would work the same as your main home insurance.

I think there has been an error here - most home insurers cannot even cover you for HE unless you have buildings / contents with them - which you do not.

Speak to Halifax - unless they told you in the original conversation or online communication that this HE cover was non refundable / cancellable(?) then you should get your money back.
