Smashed TV screen claim question?

Options
My 2 1/2 year old daughter today smashed my 5 month old TV, my question is I have checked where I bought it from and they no longer stock the model and I can't locate any where online that does. If they pay out how will it work as I have never claimed before, will they try and locate the same set or do they send you a cheque for the value I paid for it.
Also I did pay on Barclaycard, do they have claims insurance or should I just use home insurance?

Don't think the Bcard will offer you any cover, so home insurance.

Insurers treat claims differently, so may be cash, or new for old, or you get to choose a similar model.
  • Ok thanks, can't believe it, only 5 months old and I paid a extra £200 to have it calibrated as well. Gutted is not the word as well as having to pay £200 excess on home insurance...

On the bright side, if your daughter is only 2, it means she has a lot of pocket money to come that you can take it out of. :)

How much is the screen - is it worth claiming or are you better off just buying another (on the basis that your premiums will rise due to the claim)?
  • £1200 I paid for it. I do have no claims protection on my home insurance as well. In over 20 years I have never had to claim in car or home or any insurance. Suppose it had to happen...

Not very moneysaving. Next time, just muck around with the settings yourself!

The same happened to a friends, older, £500 TV. She is hoping to get it repaired, I suspect a new one would be cheaper. Out of interest have you had quotes to replace the screen
  • It only happened yesterday, I am waiting for them to contact me within 48 hours. Didn't think you could replace the screens on a plasma?

I suspect it can be replaced if the parts are available but its likely to cost as much as a new tv.

Yeah and it'll also then be a "repaired" TV rather than one which is just a few months old.
If the Insurance pays out, they'll go for the cheapest option which is probably still a repair (but only just).
  • Spoke to them today, as soon as I said its a plasma she just started looking for a replacement TV. Problem is this model is out of stock everywhere now, she did offer me the 60" version but that will be too big so they are sending the request to another department which if they can't find one then they will offer a cash settlement for the TV...
