Hi, have had a basic account with RBS since 2009 but rarely use it. Just applied online for a select current account seen as my credit rating is much better these days. It said i'd been accepted and could chose either of the 3 accounts (select, select silver and platinum). Told me to click the one i wanted and click next which I did and it then said sorry we cannot process your application any further online, it says a letter is being sent out to me with a form to sign and tell me what i need to do and any documents they need and they will keep the application open until 9th May. Whats that all about? I assumed I could do it all online so what has gone wrong??

Email says: We'll send you a letter explaining the details of the documents we need. Once we've received the documents, we'll process your application and confirm your new account details as soon as possible.

Can't help i'm afraid. I opened an RBS Select account last night and managed to do everything including verifying my ID online.

I recall an option early in the application to do online ID or take into a branch, is it possible you ticked the wrong box?

As an aside, if you can get a current account then there are much better options than RBS out there.

I opened mine only because RBS are the only bank with a branch local to me and i will use it only for depositing cheques before moving the money to my Santander 123. I used to pay in cheques via the Post Office but one went missing and I don't want to risk the hassle again.

It sounds as though they had problems verifying your identity online. It may be your details or address vary slightly to that at the CRA or electoral register.

Yeh I guess that could be it because the reason I havnt used the basic account for so long is because i forgot log in details before n got locked out n never sorted it out just stopped using it. What documents will they want to see what they are referring to or is that for my income?
  • ive had this a couple of times teabag

some accounts seem to open straight away online. Santander and Lloyds let me open online no problem.

but with TSB & NatWest I was asked to go to branch and take documents.

basically they need to see a couple of things. passport/driving licence plus a recent utility bill.

its a bit of a pain but when I took my docs in the accounts were opened straight away. its also a bit confusing re why some want to see the docs and some don't. Lloyds and TSB are part of same group but seem to operate differently.

Can I ask how did you verify your identity online? It's just that I applied for an additional select account online while logged in to my rbs online banking and I've received an email since, asking me to click on a link to upload a photo of the front and back of my driving licence along with some personal details. I'm just slightly suspicious.

    Anyone heard of this before?

People's ID gets electronically verified against the Electoral Register and against credit reference agency files.

Although it is feasible that an organisation can ask you to electronically provide additional information, I would never ever act one any email asking me to click on any link, regardless of the alleged purpose.

It's legit, it goes to their team RBSapplications@rbs.co.cuk

(You can still bring the ID into branch)
