Garden Design - turf question

Good morning all!
After receiving quotes of over 1k to turf and chip bark our garden I am aiming to do it myself. I have a lot of questions but the major one is regarding the turf. Our soil is rubbish and full of big stones and weeds. I am going to get a skip and big out around 4 inches. Do I then just need top soil before laying the turf? The area is only around 28m2 so not the biggest. Also does anyone know the best places to get this from? I live in Southampton and there are so many options online. The other area will be chip bark for the kids house, slide etc.
Any help would be great!

Sometimes on ebay people have topsoil available when they have dug out a pond, also on freecycle.
Is there Japenese Knotweed in your area? That would be my main concern when bringing topsoil into the garden. If so, I wouldn't get it from ebay or freecycle. A good supplier will specify JK free.
We got our topsoil after asking at the local garden centre where they recommended. It was about half the price that the larger companies locally were charging.
You need to get a wiggle on with your turf. It would be a shame if you went to all that trouble and then it died because you had difficulty keeping it watered. Sounds daft I know after the winter we have had, but prolonged dry spells would make life for your new turf hard.It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.
