thanks everyone, I'm definitely going to have a go. I've got an old power washer which hasn't been used for 10 years (not Karcher) so I'll try that first on a small area in case its a disaster !

I have used the T racer patio attachment and that takes the sand out between the blocks. use the power washer and a stiff broom and that should be fine,0
