Can ovoenergy claim 100% renewable when they sell gas
Options
I'm in the process of switching and am looking at ovoenergy. They have a tarrif which claims to be 100% renewable, including gas. Is this correct? Is gas really renewable? I've heard of green gasmills, but these are far and few between at the moment (Holland has a few), but can they really claim that their gas is 100% renewable?
I find the lack of information on the website a little disconcerting about their green credentials.

I just spoke to someone from ovo who said that they take the amount of gas that I used and then purchase the same amount of green electricity (match it) and sell that on to someone else.
However, I use far much more kw/h gas than I do electricity, so I'm wondering if they have enough gas suppliers, how do they find the demand for this amount electricity?0 -
Maybe that is why Ovo sell electricity only, electricity and gas, but not gas only?0

Your Green Electricity from OVO is the same as everyone else gets.
Today for example:-
Combined Cycle Gas Turbine 12,536 MW
Coal 14,757 MW
Nuclear 6,956 MW
Wind 734 MW
Pumped Storage Hydro 566 MW
Non Pumped Storage Hydro 862 MW
Interconnect - France 2,001 MW
Interconnect - Ireland 0 MW
Interconnect - Netherlands 996 MW
Shows how useless windmills are. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Not sure that is correct
http://www.ovoenergy.com/fair-energy/energy-sources/if you go with our 100% renewable electricity plan, what we can guarantee is that for every unit you buy from us, we’ll buy one back that’s 100% renewable - and comes with Ofgem’s Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificate.
Can't see coal being classed as renewable0 -
The figures will vary from day to day, if there is no wind at all there will be no renewable energy in the grid save some hydro and a little solar.
However what comes out of your plug sockets is made up of the mix shown above.

Wind atm is meeting just 2.0 % of our total electricity needs. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
So, if everyone is getting the same, how can they charge more for a green tarriff?
And is it true to claim that by purchasing the same amount of electricity, that offsets the gas as 'green'?0 -
You are getting there, they charge more by conning people into thinking they are saving the planet.

- because tree huggers and hairy-shirters are believers and will pay for a tariff that supports their misplaced belief
- ebico for example, which is in fact SSE is [%] 14 % renewable's, 35% coal, 49% gas and 1% nuclear - so is 84% non-renewableDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Unless you are an extremely low user, you will pay considerably more for Ebico, compared to Ovo's standard offering
Ebico are probably more expensive than than Ovo's green offering too.0 -
The point is that it doesn't matter who you buy your electricity from, it is all the same, so you may as well go for the cheapest supplier. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
