Overpayment with child tax & working tax

Hi i will start by saying i work and and have two teenage children 19 and 20 yr old. and i forgot to tell tax credits that they left 6th form.

My problem is currently working but with a income slightly over 1k and a single parent with no help but owe tax credits of £2066 I also suffer with depression and severe anxiety.

I except i will have to make payment but i can only afford £50 a month will they accept this as I am scared of them demanding it all at once and then getting bailiffs to come and enter my house.

It has been quite a while since I received an overpayment but I was under the impression they would alter your award and take some out of each payment and recover it that way. You could always ask if they still do this
  • I don't get any money from tax credits I wish hence why um worried.

Sorry my mistake I received an overpayment some years back when my claim changed from single to joint and because the claim had changed they couldn't recover the money by altering the claim, I can't recall the amount but I paid 75 a month and to be fair when I called to arrange the payment plan they were actually very understanding.
  • Hi there

I'd had an overpayment about 5 yrs ago & if you respond to the letter within the time stated you can arrange a payment plan & explain just how much you can afford to pay back!!!
  • I think I will call them today and stop burying me head in the sand.

they will ask you to do a breakdown of your income/outgoings
im paying back £60 per month which is what i can afford and they said they will accept it now but they will review it in a few months as they want me to pay more, mine was for a couple of over payments but was just over a grand in total x
