I dont think people realise how much its costing all of us, who pay their bills, by the bad debtors, bypassers and cannabis growing industry( which is booming.) The usual trick with the bad debtors is to rent a property with credit meters and default on payment to the max until the supplier finally see the light and enter under warrant to fit prepays. this can be one, two, three years down the line or several thousand pounds of free energy. The RPU people at Brit Gas reckon this is even higher than bypassing. Bypassing costs us all approx £30 a year in higher costs, double that for the bad debt industry and its now £60 a year coming out of my pocket every year, and its all rising fast. Smarts can end all this , as Spiro says, they can be easily configured to work in prepay or credit mode. The MP s who voted to make it ok to refuse them have really messed it up0

I'm indifferent about smart meters being fitted. I object to consumers being forced to pay for something very few want, need or understand.
Give consumers the choice of having these installed at their expense. You'd soon see who welcomes smart metering.0 -

I ve been going round for the last five years now, meeting people who have just had smarts and hardly EVER meet anyone who gives a toss about them I would say that 99 out of 100 simply accept whatever meter the man fits without any fuss. The oddball who decides to be awkward has ulterior motives in many cases, and anyone who starts going on about wifi signals going through their brains are just plain hypocrites. Smarts make a lot of sense in many ways
Fine. You get one then, but don't foist it on those of us who don't one. My reasons for not wanting one are privacy and security.0 -

Either way its of no consequence to me, the two things that attract me are (1) precisely the fact that it introduces instantaneous credit, prepayment and disconnection modes and (2) the potential for innovative TOD [time of day] tariffs, radical societal and cheaper methods of delivery for domestic Economy 7 plus variants offers electric energy storage systems.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I think once Smart metres are widespread we will see peak and off peak charging being forced on us (yes I know you can, in many cases choose Economy 7 now, but the point is, it's a choice).
I also suspect new legislation will come in forcing all new appliances to be "Smart Appliances", like we saw incandescent bulbs become illegal in the EU. As I understand it, these will allow the electricity supplier to send a signal to your appliances to turn off at periods of high demand. So it will give the supplier some control over your usage.
I think most of the positives are for the suppliers, rather than consumers.0 -

You've got some evidence for this assertion? If true, I wonder how the £60 would be justified for a low tech device requiring next to no maintenance that no one apart from me ever reads (they don't even come round once a year at the moment).0
