Tell them the situation and see if you can get the negative marks removed.

Hopefully the OP will come across someone who has dealt with this scenario before - and given the number of people on here who have reported this, the chances of that are quite high!

The orange issue wont be helping but applying to tesco with barely any credit file history is likely to lead to the rejection as much as the late payments. You dont say if your on the electoral role, how long you have lived at your address, how long in work etc I appreciate you wont on a public forum but all these questions and the answers you gave on your application will have lead to tesco rejecting you, in the rejection letter/email did they say it was due to past payment issues or just the normal vague credit score answer?

I would make a formal complaint to orange and then if you dont get any satisfaction complain to the ombudsman and from that point also complain to the ICO.

It may though take upto 6 months to get this corrected.

As you have only made one application it may be worth while using the moneysavingexpert credit card checker to see what your chances are for the credit builder cards such as barclaycard initial, capital one classic or vanquis or aqua all cards designed for people with no credit history.

Downsides to these cards are normally high interest rates, low credit limits and infrequent credit limit increases.

but they all help build your credit history and get one now and you could have a good few green ticks when the orange situation is resolved.

As you said you have had no credit cards and loans in the past, meaning your credit history is very liimited. This is most likly what is preventing you from getting the cards you want.

the 0% credit cards are generally reserved for those with good credit history (history of other credit card use) which you dont have

The worst bit is they couldn't take the payment as I cancelled my direct debit, for this exact reason (unexpected hidden fees!) I was charged an arm and leg over the course of my 24 month contract for various things that I had various levels of success in disputing!

I've heard similar stories myself from friends regarding Orange. Absolute swindlers.

This is your problem then, cancelling your direct debit even though you suspected that the account was not settled. Doing this and then not checking was always likely to be an issue in the future.

Orange have pulled the same stunt in me recently. I moved to Vodafone requested a PAC etc.

Orange advised me last bill would have been in February. I let the direct debit go they suspended my online access so I was no longer able to view my account, to find out there was still an amount of £19.00 owing.

The only reason I was aware of this wa because I got a text saying my bill was ready to view online, which prompted me to query my account. Luckily it was noticed before it had a negative impact in my credit file.

They have a bad reputation when it ones to final billing apparently.

Don't forget though: this is not the fault of Orange, nor the fault of the CRAs, so --- it must be your fault ??? Remember utility companies, phone providers and the rest, togther with the CRAs, can do no wrong, and if they do, your are responsible for it.
  • Thanks for the replies guys.

    Here's what I did

    So my main questions are:

1.) Is this charge legit? Apparently it was for transferring my telephone number to a new provider. I cannot check any details of my previous bills as they will not let me access my online account. I had no idea about it until now.

I can't find any info into the legitimacy of the charge. Other providers don't seem to do it, I wasn't aware of it, and I can't access the contract due to Orange denying you access to your account after the contract is finished.

2.) How can I escalate with Orange? Neither the store or phone representative gave me details to escalate.

Thanks for JKSandy for this email creditfilequery@orange.co.uk

I emailed and explained the situation. They replied and referred me to the debt collection agency (who I called to discover they had no record of me), and the Orange collections team (who referred me to the billing team... who again referred me to the collections team...). So I just thought balls to it I'll pay and then email again.

Once I'd paid I received a reply and was told it will be wiped from my credit file, so we'll see how long that takes.

3.) Once paid or written off, how do I get my credit score fixed? How long does this take?

This is still the thing I need to know. Orange said it would take 72 hours, still got 24 of those remaining. The question then is when will Equifax etc reflect these changes? It's only then that I can appeal my credit card rejection and get the money I need.
