Seven responses and not one answers the OPs question!

My understanding is that lanes have to be marked but the only requirement for illuminated markings is at motorway exits where colour coded markings are required.

    My apologies for that omission.

Lanes must be marked - but cat eyes are up to the Highways Agency AFAIK.

Don't expect or look for any changes soon.

Bankers need bonuses which is much more important.

However we could lobby the government for the re-introduction of Road Tax which could be used to repair potholes/upgrade the road network.

that's what we pay a portion of our council tax towards amongst otherthings how that money is devided planned and executed by your local departments is another matter.

The OP could write a strong worded letter their local chief of council or the area that ther motorway section belongs to, forward a copy to the relevant minister at government and MP. But the fact remains that they will do diddly squat unless you wish to provide millions in "donations" at the same time.

personally I find cats eyes a waste of local money as HGV's MPVS and cars run over them frequently damaging them soon after they have been put there road grime and silt often limit their effectiveness.

I think well maintained cats eyes should be a priority on unlit motorways. They allow you to see the lane markings at a much greater distance without resorting to overly bright headlights. On lanes where small sections of cats eyes have been replaced on one side of the lane the difference between old and new is massive.

Op. Check you headlights are clean during a journey. Dirty headlights can make a difference.

There is a big difference in how our various roads are funded.

Motorways and Trunk Roads/Primary Routes are the responsibility of the Government through the Highways Agency. We all contribute to that through all the different kinds of taxes - as the roads money comes from the general 'pot', not just vehicle and fuel taxes, VAT etc.

Local roads are the responsibility of the local authority, and that's where your Council Tax goes towards.

Well I bought a couple of extra bright dipped headlamp bulbs and took them into the garage. Dave confirmed they were the right fitment for my car and that they would not overload the electrics. He then installed them for me (I have neither tools nor expertise to do it myself) and also realigned the lamps - he said one was very out of line and pointing down. Said they should work a treat now. Will keep you posted.

This is something that has been peeing me off for quite a while.

Here up in the North West our lights are turned off, the road markings/lines are worn out and the only cats eyes that seem to work are the ones at the edges of the motorway (I suspect they get less abuse).

Along with the increase in misaligned and extremely bright lights, cars with lights that do not work etc I hate driving at night.
