How do you get a smooth (non orange peel) finish with a roller?

Keep seeing rooms with perfectly smooth flat painted walls with no brush strokes or roller marks, how do they do it?

Get the paint loading on the roller correct. You can tell by the sound of it, funnily enough, when it's time to reload the roller.

Use a decent quality roller and decent paint.

Pads for me. I always seem to end up with more paint on me than on the walls with rollers. I find the pads really easy and quick.

That's what decorators' overalls and dust sheets are for. The lighter you are with the roller, the less it will spray, I find. But I still cover everything below the area I'm rolling.

I found the following "tip" whilst looking for something else ! :

Tip: Roller/Brush Marks on Deep Colours
Dark or deep colours have a habit ofshowing up all kinds of roller marks, streaks especially where cutting in andaround light fittings.
Prevent that problem by adding about 10% Floetrol into your paint. Paint willflow out level with no brush marks or streaks.

Thanks to everyone who has replied. I'm going to stick to brushes and a roller :)
  • I think the rule of thumb is what your good/used to, stick with that way! personal choice.

I can't use rollers at all get more paint on me than walls but I'm very quick with the pad and get great even coverage on the walls. My dad is the opposite great with a roller so I get him to paint my ceilings.
