I have a Cherokee. MPG is diabolical 22-24 generally, can get 30 if you drive like a vicar on a long motorway run. Towing you will get 16-19 mpg depending on weight. You have to drive over 60mph to get decent mpg as the automatic searches at speeds lower than that.

Parts are expensive but in my view the Mitorri engine is strong (if unrefined which is a plus these days).

As has been said the Patriot is in a different class and has low towing capacity. The Cherokee is very good for towing.

Space is poor especially with a fitted dog guard.

I would have a Grand Cherokee over a Cherokee any day.

I have it for towing and to be fair it does that pretty well but for day to day driving it is a PITA!
  • not the best 4x4, your eyes will pop out your head when you see some of the main stream wear parts cost.

I've got a 2007 Grand Cherokee Overland. Typically get anywhere between 20-25mpg, but have got 28-30 on a long journey, depends how you drive.

Mine has got the 3.0L merc engine which goes pretty well and has been trouble free so far.

Shop around wisely and main stream wear parts costs aren't as bad as suggested in comparison with other 4x4s.

Had mine 10 months, and nothing other than wear and tear parts been changed.

Hmm. Looks mixed. I'd go for the Grand Cherokee tho.

Does it have to be a Jeep?

A Suzuki Grand Vitara is a nice medium 4x4 with off road capability.
A Rav4 is a great on-road 4x4 with a bit of speedhump and muddy lane work thrown in.

I had a Cherokee once, Terrible build quality, I'd not consider another.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Not necessarily a jeep. Just got a bit swayed with looks, price(<5k) and mfg mileage(which now seems far from what people suggest).

Also comparing the ones suggested including santa fe, CRV, X-trail

Mate bought the later 3L diesel jeep £400 a year tax.

I had no idea what my SD1's did to the gallon. Fuel prices back then didnt seem that bad so putting £20 in actually got quite a bit of fuel.
