Can you use comparison sites to switch if you are moving house?

Options
The title says it all really. When you fill in the forms on the comparison sites they ask for current usage- so logically you put in the current useage in your current house.

But then if you go on to fill in the form to switch it tells you that it will be passed to your new provider who will contact your current provider. Is the system sophisticated enough to contact the actual supplier of the new house you are moving into, or will they contact the supplier of the house you are moving out of (who are your current provider, but not the current provider of the house you're moving in to?)

I could just go direct to the provider to set it up- but then i don't benefit from any cash back deals.

Help? :money:

Not sure if it would be easier to just inform existing suppliers that you are moving and they could move you over?

Maybe then once everything is transferred to your new property you may get some idea of the energy usage and then try comparison sites ?

If you have no existing suppliers and you cant do it on comparison sites then im thinking the only option is to contact the supplier you wish to go with for advices.

I do not think that moving property would affect any existing contract length you have with existing suppliers.

You need to find out who is already supply the address and switch from them to your new supplier. You might get lucky and they might be the ones you want. Or not, and you're probably in for 2-3 months of pain.

When you filled in the comparison site, you presumably gave the site details of the current supplier & tariff.

Otherwise how did it compare and how did it calculate the savings?

You don't get cashback from transferring tariff with the same supplier - yopu can only get cashback when switching supplier (and then only the suppliers the comparison site will allow you to switch via them with)

    Remember: GIGO!
(If you gave duff info to start with, don't believe what you get out, especially any suggested possibility of cashback)

Once the OP has registered with the current supplier(s) - which can usually be done instantly via a phone call to that supplier - then switching should typically take about 4 weeks. No pain whatsoever in my multiple experiences of switching.
  • Thanks guys. I managed to find the current supplier so can didn't it that way.

As for comparing- I said I didn't know how much I spend a month and it asks other questions about usage- simple

But it still asks for details of your current supplier(s) and tariff(s) ;)

And I selected the current supplier, and standard tariff which is what they'd put me on:). Then I looked all the unit prices and standing charges and worked out that single fuel is the way for us:)
