I started using Metro bank late last year (unfortunately it is only currently based in the south east).

I have it as a second account to my current account and use it just for traveling. The account is easy to open with some ID and I did it within 20mins of walking into my branch without an appointment.

They did unlimited free worldwide Mastercard ATM withdrawals an card transactions until last month - this is now just free within specified European countries (they have to be signed up to some kind of banking agreement that I can't think of right now). It covers all the main destinations in Europe.

I have used Halifax Reward Clarity Credit Card and the old 3% Aqua Reward Card for online purchase (including PayPal) and when travelling abroad.
The new Aqua Reward Card has a Non-Sterling Transaction Fee of 0%.
The exchange rates are also the best one can get.
Indicative rates can be found at
    https://www.mastercard.com/global/currencyconversion/index.html
Plus unlike others you get 0.5% cashback.
Use it only for purchases. Cash withdrawals carry a fee of 3%.
