It has helped - I feel less alone now...

You are definately not alone, there is so much help and support out there.

The Debt Advice charities are a god send, they really are. There are companies who will try and make money out of your misery by charging you for the same services.

Contact one as soon as possible, and like i said earlier theres lots of people on here that offer advice and support whatever your problem.

Best Wishes :) keep updating your thread and let us know how you are getting on

Looks like you've been given some sound advice.

You mention the loans are joint, is your OH paying them?

How much of the debt is just yours? As the house is in his name maybe going bankrupt is an option for you?

It sounds scary but its really not (from what i've heard) and its done and dusted.

Nothing is worth your health :-)

Martin produced an amazing book on dealing with mental health issues and debt. I cant find the link but its really worth the read.

So far I've managed to use my benefits to stay on top of my share of the loan. But I can't keep it up much longer - the repayments for my credit cards are getting more difficult to stay on top of.

Around £7000 is just mine. But my dad went bakrupt when I was a kid, and it haunted him for years - I don't know that that's going to be the way out of this. I think my biggest issue is that I need to get back to work, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

The link is at the top of the Forum page and it is brilliant. I've also had a lot of mental health issues and spent some time in hospital but I'm lucky to have a really good employer who have been fantastic throughout. I was advised by Stepchange who I am doing a DMP through to tell my creditors about my issues and in fact my GP did a letter for me which I copied to all of them; there is a good chance that they will have to be more helpful to you because of it. I would echo speaking to one of the debt charities, SC were incredible and it's been a huge weight off my mind and given me a chance to concentrate on getting better. My OH & I started off with over £70k of unsecured debt as well as a large mortgage & we are already down into the £50k's so please don't panic, it is all sortable.
Started DMP Oct 2012 debtfree date 1st March 2020
    Starting debt £72481
    Current debt £47600. 33% paid off!!!:T:rotfl::rotfl::j
Moved from £70's to £60's, bye bye £50's and hello £40's!

Well the first priority is to get yourself well. The 10k is not great, but it's just a number. You haven't committed any crime or murdered anybody. It CAN be dealt with but first you have to build yourself up and get stronger in yourself. O.k so the people you owe money to aren't going to be happy but realistically what can they do? They can huff and puff and jump up and down but they can't take money you don't have. O.K so they might take you to court (wasting their time and money). The likely out come would be that a judge agree that you owe the money and make an order for you to repay it at a rate you can afford (which may be just 1 pound per month per debt).
In terms of filling out the medical/benefit forms people on the benefits form on here might be able to help or your local CAB or DIAL. Someone like MIND or Rethink though would be particularly good as they would be used to dealing with people who have mental health issues so they would have an idea of how to fill the form out for your circumstances (although you'd obviously have to have an input).
The thing with mental illness is 1) you can't see it and 2) you don't always realise you have it. It's strange. It's incredibly difficult to tell if you are getting better and making progress but one day you will look back and realise how far you have come. It is a horrid illness but you can recover (you probably just won't appreciate that at the moment).
Take one day at a time, baby steps.

It doesn't matter how small the baby steps are and some days you will find it harder than others but keep at it. Even if all you do is get dressed or phone a friend or walk to the shops. It doesn't matter, what matters is trying to do something, no matter how small. This might sound really stupid and you might think that you can do all this anyway when you are well but obviously when you are ill, you are ill. It's like expecting an olympic athlete who's broken their leg to run a marathon the day after the plaster comes off because they could do it before they broke it.
Even the debt can be sorted if you break it down into small enough chunks that you can deal with it.
