Alternative to PO BOX

We are registering an organisation as a charity and need a address - we wont be getting much mail and PO BOX seems very over priced. Does anyone have cheaper suggestions? We are based in London.

Lots of companies offer a mailbox rental service (e.g. http://www.mbe.co.uk/mailbox_services/rent_a_mailbox still costs in excess of £300 per year though).

Could you just not use your home address? Also, are you able to make the registered address of a charity P.O. Box?

You say you are based in London, so use that address. You won't find cheaper :)

RM PO BOX used to be very affordable several years back. When I joined it was something like £63 for a box, then on renewal they wanted close to £100 then they upped it again to £150, so I just cancelled it.

All private companies will start at somewhere at least £200 p.a. possibly more.
  • I have seen a few grant-making charities use a PO Box, but it is possible to find out the address.

Many grant-seeking charities have trustees' home addresses as the contact on the Charity Commission website.

Do you have an accountant lined up? Our charity's registered address was there for a number of years, although when we registered with the Care Quality Commission we had to change it to our regular premises.

The organisation must have a street address -- or, if it doesn't have premises of its own, it must be run by people who have street addresses -- so using one of those would be free of charge.

If you want to avoid giving out a street address for whatever reason, a PO Box is cheaper than private alternatives. I think the Royal Mail are still obliged to inform anyone who formally enquires of the street address to which the box is registered, however, but not many people know that (or will go to the trouble) so it's still pretty private.

Id be surprised if the charity commission will allow anyone to register using a po box address.
