I'd rather curb the wheel than damage the tyre sidewall.

"You know like the VeeDub lads do." - Erm no, never heard of them.

"I suggest you wind your next in a bit." - what is that about?

Cheap tyres tend to be narrower than expensive ones.

Put simply, especially for you, a Pirelli(and indeed the other OE fitment Dunlop) 275/40/19 is WIDER than an Accelerra 275/40/19.

Also a Pirelli(and indeed other OE fitment Dunlop) 245/45/19 is WIDER than an Accelerra 245/45/19.

    Get the concept now.

It's the first I've heard of that. Yes, the sidewall markings are the nominal size, and there is some variation between brands - but I've never heard of such a blanket "rule of thumb", for want of a better term.

OK bigjl, if your not talking about tyres with rim savers, I'd like to see those pics of 275/40/19s and 245/45/19s that are different in widths from different manufacturers?
Or do you mean that even inflated properly that some tyres have such weak sidewalls they deform out of shape?

To be fair to Bigjl, I have noticed that some (but certainly not all) cheap tyres do have less tread width and the tyre walls curve in more at the edge nearest the tread. However I have also had cheap tyres with wide tread and a very rounded sidewall; I guess they would protect an alloy better however at the expense of possible sidewall damage; that was my point to which Bigjl seems to take exception.

I have a Pirelli P7 here in front of me, 205/55/16 (well, I did five minutes ago, they're in the shed), and a Mohawk tyre of the same size. Both brand-new.

Width of tread appears to be exactly the same, within a couple of mm (and the Mohawk is wider).

However, the Mohawk does only have 7mm of tread whereas the P7 is 8mm.

Just something i have noticed over the years.

First seen it with Nankangs. An underrated tyre very often. Bought wheels for my Legacy on eBay which had mixed tyres of brands, think they were Toyo Proxes and Contis.

When Nankangs where fitted you could see they had the stretched appearance so loved by the VeeDub lads, and a few of the JDM scene.

But very obvious with the Accelleras on my car.

They almost look like they are the wrong size for the rim.

I would have taken them off earlier but they are marked up as All Season so not going to change them till they need it.

A pity as they wear well and are almost as good as the expensive Pirellis. Not driven an XJ on the other OE choice, Dunlops though.

Why not go up the local Jag dealer and take some photos yourself.

I have no need to prove anything i have said.

Chose to believe or not is your choice.

Or why not put yourself in a position to know for yourself.

Go and buy a Jag XJ then put Accelleras on and have a look.

And no i am not talking about a rimguard.

    Accelleras have a rimguard.

But it isn't thick enough to make up for the fact the tyres are slightly narrower than the OE fitment Pirelli and Dunlop.

Popped outside and none of the Jags have anything but Pirelli or Continentals on them and they all look the same size to me.
