Closing a paypal account after the death of the account holder

Hi,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place I wasn't sure where to post it.

My mother died last year, everyone was informed and some were easier to deal with than others.

She died very suddenly and left no will but as my dad is still alive everything passed to him.

We informed PayPal of my mothers death and sent a copy of the death certificate, as we did with most people. However, they also asked for the executors details, photographic proof of id and a letter from the executor stating the account should be closed. As there was no executor we did not send this information in but sent a covering letter explaining the details. We heard nothing more from them. There was no balance on the account so we left it at that.

A few weeks ago my dad saw some dd's go through his account from Paypal, as he does not have an account with them he stopped them going through and the money was refunded - I should explain that the account was previously in joint names and my mums PayPal payments were taken from this account.

Anyway today Credit solutions called my dad asking to speak to my mum, it turns out that PayPal are chasing for an outstanding debt, (probably the returned direct debits)

I have spoken to PayPal, who said they had no record of my mothers death and insisted I send a copy if the death certificate through my own account which I have done, but now they say they can't close it without the executors information, id and copy of the will or a legal letter. I don't really give a damn if they close it or not but they need to stop transactions going through it.

Where do we stand, what do you suggest we do to get PayPal to listen to us? As it's coming up to the anniversary of her death my dad is quite fragile and I am trying to help but they just won't listen. The last thing he needs is someone chasing money for something that was charged nearly 12 months after her death, without his knowledge and we can't even find out what it is for.

They are being so insensitive and rigid but we can't seem to get through to them at all..... Any advice?

L x

I would do a search there seems to be quite a few others that have posts all over the place regarding paypal and trying to close accounts.

They should only need a death certificate.

I would keep an eye on the account where the DD came from, paypal may try to set up a new one, this should not be possible as the account should now be in a sole name.

As an intestate estate and if there were items that were solely held by your mother then Administration should have been applied for and granted and this is what Paypal will want to see.

If there was no funds in the paypal account and no transactions outstanding at the time of your mothers death then they should not have applied for any money. Unless Paypal have changed in the last year they dont charge for having an account.

It may be worthwhile having a solicitor write to them and this should stop Paypal pushing for more ID etc
