St Andrews Life/Halifax PIP

Not sure if this is the right part of the forum, my mother had a "Cautious Managed Fund" PIP with Halifax/St Andrews from 2007, with a lump sum investment, never made any withdrawals, sadly she passed away last december, the value of the plan is £128,000, and the Halifax have contacted us saying that this is the plan amount to be paid out, but I noticed that the plan also provides life cover with the death benefit payable on the death of the life covered, so is this £128,000 the death benefit life cover, or is the death benefit a separate amount, or am I totally confused?
