I'll have them for you, how soon can you deliver?

Your husband is entitled to time off, but it might have to be unpaid:

Clearly, your oldest is reliable, however I think if I were you I'd get your husband to go back to his employers and assert his rights. If you were spending the night away at a Kate Bush concert I'd say leave them, but because its a medical reason maybe err on the side of caution.

If they were left alone, would your husband be contactable at work?
  • I thought you were going to say they were 11 and 12 or something. Can’t see any problem at all.

There's a queue forming. Children who hoover when left alone?? You could make a fortune hiring them out OP!
  • Tell them it's a test, and if they pass you will give them much more freedom in future.

In all honesty kids that age usually step up to the Mark.

No problem at that age, surely.

However, I wouldn't insist on your husband's employer giving him leave on this occasion in case you have real need of it in the future.

I can't see a problem with children of that age staying home alone for just one night. When I was 17 my parents left me at home for a week on my own as I needed to work and they needed to visit my grandmother who lived 8 hours away. The next door neighbours did keep an eye out for me though so if you are on good terms with your neighbours maybe just mention to them what's happening.

Has the OP told us when her hospital stay is happening and I've missed it?

If its too short notice for parental leave, then emergency leave for dependents will apply, I think:

    https://www.gov.uk/time-off-for-dependants/your-rights

I realise I'm slightly out of step with the rest of the thread here, but that's partly because we don't know what the OP is going into hospital for. My response would be different if it were for observation or a blood transfusion than if it were for an operation with general anaesthetic.
