On going drainage problems...

Hi all,
Im just looking for a bit of advice reall. Since December we have had ongoing drainage problems in our rented property. We reported it to the landlord who sent his handyman round on several occasions before the man admitted the problem was beyon him.
it then became the property managements problems they took a long time to sort the problem. throughout this we couldnt use our kitchen sink or washing machine as it wouldnt drain and when upstarirs used theirs it flooded our kitchen countless times, the kitchen smelt of sweage and there were flies (always dead) in our kitchen.
the property management company said we would be entitled to compensation from them, but how would be best to apply for this? does anyone have a letter template or format for making a complaint to them? or any key points I need to put accross when writing to them?
