Pond fish need a new home

Howdy folks

As the title says, we've got a few fish living in a pond and they need a new home asap, as we don't know how to/won't be able to look after them. The pet shop won't buy them because they're pond fish, so we're looking to rehome. They're goldfish, I think, nothing fancy. These fish are Londoners btw :p

You have to be careful with this. If people have a wildlife pond (we do!) you don't want fish in it. For example, we have frogs, toads and newts and these do not co-exist with fish. Even if you're feeding the fish they will predate on the frog-spawn etc.

When we had our pond made a few years ago we were told by many people 'Oh, what kind of fish are you getting?' It was assumed that we were going to buy non-native species of ornamental fish. No, we weren't!

There is a need for more ponds to help the native wildlife. We have endless pleasure watching the birds coming to drink and to bathe. Once you have re-homed your fish you'll probably find your pond is colonised by native amphibians and you'll get endless delight from watching it all.

When I closed my pond down, I photo the fish in batches and put them on eby, and they sold very quickly.

And yes they did eat any frogs spawn they could find!

Just been down to look at the pond, which is absolutely full of tadpoles!

One year we had a grey heron down, obviously looking for fish. He was disappointed, but he did manage to stick his beak through the liner, and the pond never recovered. It just turned into a big mud puddle. Last summer we had it all re-done, had a hard liner put in and now it's possible to see into the clear water, which we never could before. I was amazed and delighted a couple of weeks ago to see the newts in there! I didn't know we had newts.

We have 2 ponds, 1 for fish and 1 for wildlife, have had loads of tadpoles. The fish pond is netted but froge still find away in, we have to net because of seagulls and even a heron.I love to watch the birds havinf a bath in the other pond and spotting all kinds of life in it.

I was told that you put in a pond and it will become colonised. That's certainly true. The creatures don't spend all their time in the pond but they do need it especially at the mating season and when they hibernate. The plants we put in last year are coming back to life.
