hi all I recently took my bike for its 7500 mile service at the main dealer.
on the service schedule it says along side a normal service they should change the air filter and clean and inspect the oil filter.

when I collected I asked if this had been done and to my surprise they said no

when I asked why they told me they "we don't do that"

when I asked why to that they said if they need to get to the oil filter they would need to take the engine apart and as long as I change the oil every 3000 mile the oil will be clear and will not block the filter.

Is there any truth to this?

I'm now just over 8000 mile and getting more vibration than normal at high speed to the point I cant rest my food on the foot brake, what could this be?

thanks

    What 'bike is it?

On some small 'bikes the filter is inside the engine as they say, provided the oil is clean there is no need to mess with it.

Bike air filters last years, and are fabulously expensive.

Having said this, I would query why the service schedule shows that they should do something and they are not doing it.

Probably cost £50 to get that cleaned. Time to do it yourself I think.

Servicing a little 'bike is easy, will save you a fortune and most importantly, you know it has been done properly.

Given how straight forward it is to remove that engine casing and clean the filter, I can't see why the dealer wouldn't do it if it's on the schedule. On some bigger bikes just getting to the filter is more complex than those steps. So it seems a bit lazy of them.

Why are you 'resting' your foot on the rear brake?

Assuming you meant foot not food ;)

Very common on older bikes and four stroke scooter.

On some the strainer is cleaned on the first service.

But if you stick to sensible oil change intervals you will be fine.

I used to change oil every 1000miles when i was a courier.

Have a look at this site ...

As the filters don't get too gummed up, the labour cost of doing the work every service isn't worth it. If you want to have a go yourself, that gives you an idea of what's involved.

What is the make and model of the bike? Ah, OK just seen it is a CB125.

There are some engines that have an internal mesh-type filter but these are designed to be accessible for cleaning. It is not as straightforward as changing a cartridge filter but neither does it require the engine to be dismantled. If its a service item then it is designed to be serviced!!

The last thing you want to be doing is resting your foot on the brake pedal! It will cause the back brake to drag and the brake to overheat.

With respect to the vibration, there could be a number of causes for this and they are not all engine related.
