Payment handling charge

Does anyone else have a Broadband/phone/television package with Virgin Media and are charged £5 handling fee because you do not pay by direct debit? I feel this is grossly unfair and is a breach of our right of choice. I pay via Internet banking direct from my account to theirs and yet still charged £5. I feel this is similiar to bank charges being if not unlawful then certainly not a charge merited by companies. Does anyone agree or am I a voice in the wilderness?

BT are charging me £4.50 + VAT to allow me to pay my telephone bill, just because I won't join their direct debit scheme. Most utilities seem to want you to pay more than you need each month so they can earn interest on your money. Apparently OFCOM want to know about these charges - it is all about it in this month's Which? magazine. You can email your concerns to news@which.co.uk.0
