Previous tenant issues

Hi,

I helped my brother move into a rented flat last Sept after he split from his partner.
He's never had issues with credit cards or mortgages and gets paid well.

In Jan he tried to get a mobile phone contract and was refused on bad credit. He then tried to get a loan and was refused with a message saying 'either you or someone you are linked with has bad credit history' (words to this effect)

Now he kept getting letters to his flat address to a lady who obviously had bad credit due to the contents and there was even a baliff demand stuck on his door (which has been sorted after we proved she didn't live there and he was the sole tenant.
The question is if this lady is linked to this address, is this what is holding his credit back?

And if so, how do we get round it?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help

No. they are referring to financial associates - ie someone with whom he has had a joint financial product.

    Previous tenants don't count.

What do his credit files show? Is he associated with his ex?

Your brother could be struggling to get credit at the new address if his credit files do not yet show him as being on the electoral roll at the new address yet. Has he applied to be on the electoral roll yet?

If he has split from his partner and they previously had any joint accounts then ideally they need to be closed down and then he needs to file a notice of disassociation with each of the 3 agencies.

If they still have a mortgage together but no other open joint accounts then as they are no longer living together then the credit ref agenies should still agree to the disassociation.

credit reports aren't linked to places, just people.

it sounds to me, like maybe he had one or multiple joint accounts with his ex, and her "black marks" have led to your brothers rating dropping, which means lenders will be reluctant to lend to him.

as suggested, he really needs to get hold of his credit report and see what is going on. oh, and as already suggested, file a file a notice of disassociation from his ex.
  • Thanks for all the advice guys, will get him on the electoral roll asap
and will check out with him regards finances with his ex.

    Massive thanks again
