Clear moss off roof

Need to clean moss off roof of new house, according to the surveyor. Read on here some people using copper strips, sounds good but surely a lightning risk? Though I am planing to fit solar panels soon, which probably cause the same level of risk.

    Did he say why?

I have moss form on my roof, lumps then roll down into the gutters and block them.

My handyman did get it fairly clear last summer, but the moss just grows back again.
  • having spent 10 years cleaning roof and conservatories, employing 12 people, turning over 2mill a year I shall add my penny's worth.

Copper WILL slow down the growth of moss as Copper Sulphide created as rain water dissolves the surface of copper strip attacks the moss. This is not a good as it once was when we had acid rain in most parts of the UK. Today the sky is cleaner so th effect less obvious.
What IT WON'T DO is kill all the moss on a very mossy roof. (except maybe the top few tiles). Once the roof is clean then it will help.

Power washing the roof will be the fastest method of good cleaning. followed by moss treatment. This will keep it away for 3-5 years. Adding copper strip will then help.

The type of roof tiles is very important.

Clay tiles (Rosemary) or cement/clay mixed easy to recognise as they are usually 6" wide, 9" long and red in colour. They rot from the back and though the surface may be OK, they have rotten backs. The cleaner can not walk on them as they break for fun.

Slate. Same as above, but its less common for slate to hold moss as the roots can't get hold.

Concrete Tiles. Roots get in, Moss can be up to 4" thick, scraping is like mowing the lawn.

Anything else you need to know. just ask .
