Good letter from Gaz, that will sort it out.
If they have no proof there is nothing they can do. Ultimately a solicitor will send a letter saying pretty much anything for the right amount of money - they are trying to bluff you into paying.
Call itThinking critically since 1996....0 -
Surely if your mother was to take legal action, she would have to prove that the full £10,000 was given. When she goes back in her records it will show a £7,500 transaction to the car dealership.0

In June 2011 I bought a car for £10000. I px my car for £2500 and my mum lent me the other £7500. For one reason or another my mum did not want her husband to know she had lent me the money. Only my husband, myself and my mum knew. Everyone else thought we had got a loan. Because of previous issues my mum gave us £1500 of the loan as a gift.

We have ignored her as she is generally quite irrational. Then we received a solicitors letter stating that my mum AND husband lent us the full £10000 for the car. And they want paying back.
[...]
Is there anything I can do? I can only prove the bank payments to my brother. She paid the £7500 on her debit card. I have no receipts for cash payments.
I'd ignore it. Your Mother and her husband have made one critical mistake: they have lied about how much the debt is for.
If they took this matter to court they would have to prove they lent you £10,000. Presumably they only have evidence of lending you £7,500 and you have evidence of providing the additional £2,500 yourself. Proving whether £1,500 was a gift or not would be a problem.
Few of these cases end up in court anyway. And courts tend not to believe people who lie, as your Mother and her husband appear to have done.0 -
To be honest, I wouldn't acknowledge anything, most especially replying to that solicitor's letter. That just opens up more potential for time-wasting dialogue.
You borrowed the money, some of it was a gift, and repaid what you owed her. Unfortunately not by any traceable method.
Solicitors will write any letters their clients ask them to for a fee. But that doesn't mean the letter carries any more weight than asking your next-door neighbour to write it on your behalf.
This will never, ever get to court.
Ignore. Ignore. Ignore.0 -
Nothing useful to add but just wanted to say, I got what you meant in your first post!!0

As above. I read through the first post and unless the OP has since edited it, I understood exactly what she meant. £1200 paid to her mum and the remainder £4800 paid to her brother = £6000. And I was never good at maths!
Sympathies to you OP. I have not spoken to my parents for 25 years and when hearing of family fall-outs from my sisters I'm better off out of it.0 -

I agree. My biological father used to pick me up and put me down whenever he wanted to from when I was a young age.
As an adult it was always me who made the effort to keep in touch with not a lot in return. It got emotionally draining and found it too much so I stopped making the effort to contact him. I got a text 6 months after that to ask why I hadn't been in touch!!!!!!!!
Needless to say, things have been much less hassle since I have had no contact and have more time to concentrate on spending time with my mum and the amazing man who is my 'dad'.0
