Small kitchen - undermount/belfast sink

Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone can offer some advise?
I have a VERY small kitchen that I had re-done last year. Unfortunately I didn't plan very well and was rushed by the chap and ended up with a huge sink and very little worktop area (also a gap instead of a join between the work tops in the L shape which has already warped). So I'm looking to get the work top and sink replaced for something that fits a little better.
I think that having a single bowl sink with the drainer built into the work top would open up the work top space. Ideally I'd like to get a belfast sink but with a front opening of just 40cms, I can't find one slim enough, although the short end would fit, would it be madness to fit a belfast sink sideways on with the short end at the front of the work top?
Am I opening myself up for a lot of hassle with wooden work tops and awkward fitting undermounted sinks? Should I just go for another laminate and the smallest sink with drainer I can find?
Really don't want to make another mistake!
Many thanks,
Floppy

I wouldn't have an undermounted sink with wooden tops.
Too much risk to the end grain of the wood.
Have you considered a single inset sink without a drainer, and using a removable drainer that you put in place when you want to use it? Wooden worktops themselves are not a problem, but you do need to look after them.
Something like this.....

You can also get plastic or wooden boards that fit over a sink bowl to give extra worktop space.0 -
If it's a very small kitchen you probably don't have a dishwasher, so need a full size sink and drainer for washing-up
Why not have the sink / drainer / worktop moulded all together out of one material, whether a synthetic like Corian, or even stainless steel - no joins and practically indestructableA kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
The new kitchen is country style cream/wooden door knobs, currently with a wood laminate top so I'd like to keep the same feel, a stainless steel work top would definitely not 'go'!
We're only likely to be there another 4-5 years max so I'm not overlly concerned about longevity, if that's the only problem with wood I'm still keen on the in built drainer idea, plenty of kitchen seem to survive with wood work tops.Mortgage Apr 18 £417,894 BTL Mar 18 £162,857
