hello
we have been renting a house from roseberry newhouse estate agents for the pass two years. we were told that the landlord lives aboard so any work to the house would take a while because its just done by email.
we were told two months ago that the landlord has passed away and his wife wants to sell the house!
so this caused a lot of stress as we had no were to go, money is tight, with all the fee's etc.
no were was coming up so i rang the estate agents and was told "some where will and its not our problem to be honest!"
we found someone were, its ok but smaller meaning we had to sell some of our furniture as there was no were for it to fit into the new house.
now here is the best bit
i was talking to my neighbor, (never really spoke, we just said hello, she is in her 80s and always inside.) the rabbit escape in to her garden. i knocked on her door to tell her i was going to get. got it and she started talking to us. saying its a shame we are leaving with a young family. told her what the estate agents told us. and to her shock she said she was speaking to the wife of the landlord last week and nothing was she about her husband.
the local butcher came to her house to drop meat and fruit and veg off. she told him, and he said. if he is dead he was in my shop the other day buying meat! he lives in the next village and owns a few houses!
now were do i stand with them lieing? if anywhere!
this new place we have moved into has cost us money we never had, had to get a credit card to pay for the deposit.
if there said the landlord wants to sell that's fair enough but to say he is dead and lives aboard is a bit wrong. we looked on our contract also and he does live in the next village!

Them telling lies about the reason has no impact at all.
If they told the truth it still amounts to them wanting you to move out for whatever reason.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Nothing you can do, the law can't protect every fool who believes what they are told.
Let this be a lesson, if someone earns money from you, don't always take what they say as gospel.0 -
You were under no obligation to move unless served with the correct notice, and even then when ordered by a Court.
Suspect it would be the agents lying to get new tenant search fees. Might be interesting to see if the landlord/lady actually know what went on.0 -
Completely unrelated.
Work needs doing on the house has nothing to do with the reason why they said they want you to leave.
If your not happy, ask them.
But as for compensation/complaints etc etc i cant see you having a leg to stand on in court. Its not illegal to lie and maybe there is a reason why they want you to leave but did not have the heart to tell you.
I rented for 10 months a couple of years ago, the landlord came to visit me and asked when i would be moving out as he wanted his daughter to move in... I asked if she was hot, she can move in with me - funnily enough he wasnt a fan of that.
Its one of those things, is not worth worrying about it as it wont get you anywhere. It's probably a bit late now if you've already signed for the new place but where you given the correct notice to leave in writing? I presume they would have served a no fault notice so they could have asked you to leave for any reason at all (or no reason). It seems very odd that they have lied to you and said the landlord is dead. It might be worth dropping the landlord a line just to let him know what you've been told but I don't think you have any comeback.

If you were served the correct notice (it should be a form called 'Section S21 Notice') 2 months in advance (and assuming it was valid) then you would have to leave.
Whether the LL had died, or not, makes no difference.
If you were not served a S21 Notice, you did not have to leave.
anselld makes a good point: perhaps the landlord is not only alive, but does not want you to move...? Perhaps it is the agent who wants you to move as he can then charge the landlord more money for finding a new tenant...!
Speak to the landlord/wife and check. If that IS the case, you and the LL together could accuse the agent of acting unprofessionally, and demand compensation for your onward move (and the LL could/should sack them).0 -
yes we were given two months notice.
there have put a for sale sign in the front garden now. im going to dig out the paper work and see if there have a phone to ring
thanks for the help also, its not the money side of it. its the fact there have lied. You be lucky:T0 -

Technically they haven't lied to you, the letting agent has. The landlords may not even know what you were told, they may have just instructed the LA t start the process for them to have vacant possession to put it on the market and the letting agent just decided to say it was being sold due to death to make things easier for them.0 -
if the landlord didn't know that you were lied to i am sure it will now get back to them- it sounds like the butcher will probably mention it. If they don't know then they will probably be pretty annoyed at the agent telling you they are dead! unless that's what they asked them to do which seems like a weird thing to do as they have every right to give you 2 months notice whether they are alive or dead.0
