Automatic transmission courtesy car / hire cars?

Hi,

Bit of a long shot here but I am going through the annual trudge through all my new car insurance renewal quotes (and have loads to work through).... thing is I have a FULL UK (Automatic) licence and drive an automatic car, no where on companies websites do they mention whether they have AUTOMATIC courtesy cars/replacements cars available should mine be off road :(

Does anyone know which companies do by any chance?

I know "The AA" do, but that was a right fiasco for them to get me one when mine was off the road for repairs like 5 years ago, and I'd never go back to using them

I have a full uk license but choose to drive auto's due to left knee problems making using a clutch painful. When my car was off the road due to an accident the third party insurer hired an auto for me (accident was completely the third parties fault, my car was parked at the time). Not sure what would happen with your own insurer but I would expect a similar thing to above.

Most insurers will ask when they are instructing a hire vehicle ask if you require an Automatic when you are submitting a claim and going through their network for repairs, if they didn't it would just waste their time as you would not legally be allowed to drive it and would make you a danger on the road in any case.

Simply put, if you make a claim, make sure to tell them you require an automatic vehicle and they should be able to provide.

A courtesy car is provided by the garage effectively at their own expense and so its simply a matter of finding a garage that has automatics.

Alternatively you can go for a hire scheme instead and certainly if you pay for the "like for like" type option then it should match being an auto. TBH, given the price difference between auto and manual at insurance company rates it wouldnt be worth their complaints process for selling the add on to someone who has declared auto only license and then not being willing to provide an auto
  • Yes I think Insurance is best.
  • If it isn't your fault then the 3rd party insurance company should give you an equivalent vehicle. If yours is an automatic then you should get an automatic. On the other hand if it was your fault and your insurance company is providing the car then it is up to your policy, although most will at least offer something you can legally drive.
