Quote for brickwork

Hi there,

I've just been quoted £370 for 4m2 of brickwork (240 bricks, standard house bricks). I'm supplying the bricks and the sand cement was part of the quote.

The work involves lining the current opening of my fireplace with reclaimed bricks to give the impression this is the original brick. It would also include laying a superimposed hearth on top of my constructional as a base with the same bricks.

I don't want to jump to a conclusion prematurely but does this seem a little steep for 240 bricks? I could be underestimating the pricing here so please excuse me if so as I don't mean to undermine the bricky, just simply find out if this is a fair price.

Also the 240 bricks and 4m2 are numbers the bricky has given me for the job after measurements; not something I've mustered up.

Thanks in advance

    Hello!

I wouldnt say that this was cheap- you havent got yourself a bargain, but it doesnt seem excessive either.

If it were this many bricks in a garden wall the brickie could do this many bricks in almost no time, point them and brush them and go home...

but this is a feature fireplace- he'll be levelling constantly and taking care over each brick, and if he takes pride in his work, the finish will be spot on (and time consuming)

As i have said... not a bargain, but not a bad price.

    Thanks Sparkychris,

I've now received 3 quotes for the work. £370, £250, and £120...That doesn't help much. I'm going to look into the £120 and see if they bricky has any examples of work he can show me, same for the £250.

    Cheers again
  • £120 sounds very cheap to me! (a bit suspiciously so).
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • The bricks are probably 65p each.

The years as an apprentice of £15 a week, the winters when there is no work, (no pay) the CSCs card they now need, the public liability insurance, the accountant, the van, the van tax, the tipping fees, the tools, the diesel, the skills learned, that fact that they do this for a living, not a hobby. PRICELESS.

I recently spoke to a lady that paid £1000 a meter for stone walling. She has 22 mtrs to do. Now thats a lot.

    Glad to help.
